How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Shade Short starts with one question: will this canopy work where you plan to use it? A canopy for a quiet deck needs different things than one for a busy craft show or a breezy ballfield.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with where you'll use it

A backyard, a market booth and a campsite each ask something different of a canopy. Size, weight, walls and carry bag all matter more in one place than another.

When your space or use narrows the choice, we say what to look for first.

2. We compare specs and features

We check the size of the frame and the shade it gives, the frame metal, leg heights, top fabric, vents, sidewalls or netting, and what comes in the box. That includes stakes, ropes, weight bags and a wheeled bag.

Crown Shades, Eurmax, ABCCANOPY and other makers describe their canopies in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what owners report after using a canopy. We look for patterns, like stuck sliders, bent legs, tops that pool water, torn seams and fading.

One bad review doesn't sink a canopy. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A canopy that suits a market seller may score lower in a guide for a casual backyard.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages current

Canopies change, and listings come and go. Makers sell close models under similar names, so we check the size, the walls and what's in the box, and we only link new units.

We skip any canopy with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have set up every canopy we cover.

A pop-up canopy can lift in a gust of wind. Follow the maker's anchoring instructions, and take the canopy down when the wind picks up.

Canopy tops are fabric, so keep them away from open flame, grills, fire pits and heaters. We label maker claims as the maker's claims.
